After PittStart

Q: When/how will I receive my fall term bill? When will it be due?

A: The University of Pittsburgh has an electronic billing process (eBill); there are no paper bills. eBills are posted in PittPAY once each month, generally just after the due date (which is always the 17th of each month). Students must be registered for classes before the date eBills are posted to be included in that month's billing, or have an unpaid balance on the student account.

  • Students who register during the May or June PittStart sessions will have an eBill posted in PittPAY in mid-July due August 17.
  • Students registering for classes during a July PittStart session occurring before the July bill date will also be included in the July billing.
  • Students registering after the July bill date but prior to the August bill date will be billed in mid-August due September 17.
  • Students registering after the August bill date will be billed in mid-September due October 17.
For your convenience, the specific eBill and due date schedules for every term are posted on the Message Board in PittPAY (which is the first screen you see when you log into PittPAY). Students receive an email to their Pitt email account each time a new eBill is posted in PittPAY. Visit http://www.bc.pitt.edu/students for additional information about eBills, PittPAY, due dates, the Optional Payment Plan, Direct Deposit and more!

Q: When is Orientation?

A: New Student Orientation begins on Tuesday, August 19th and runs until Sunday, August 24th. Although New Student Orientation is not mandatory, we highly recommend attending. The Office of Student Affairs is working hard to put together a great program. The New Student Orientation schedule of events and programs will be sent out in July with Arrival Survival move-in information. Visit www.orientation.pitt.edu for more information on New Student Orientation and Pitt Odyssey Camps.

Q: What is the difference between a PittStart session and New Student Orientation?

A: Your mandatory PittStart session is more academic while the optional New Student Orientation is more social. While there will be social activities at your PittStart session, the emphasis is placed on preparation for meeting your academic advisor and registering for classes.

Q: When do fall classes actually start?

A: Classes begin on Monday, August 25th.

Q: When is Family Weekend?

A: Family Weekend will occur in mid-October and generally coincides with Homecoming festivities. You can check out more information regarding this event at http://www.familyweekend.pitt.edu/; details of the event will be updated in July 2008.

Q: What are some important things to bring when I move into college?

A: Panther Central (housing services) has created a move-in checklist. You may obtain it by clicking here, and you may find additional information about housing issues at Panther Central's housing homepage.

Q: Who is required to have a meal plan?

A: All students living in a residence hall are required to purchase a meal plan. Students living in apartment-style housing (Bouquet Gardens, Centre Plaza, Oakwood Apartments and Forbes Craig Apartments) are not required to have meal plans but may purchase any plan. To see a list of meal plans and prices, please visit http://www.pc.pitt.edu/dining/mealplans/. If you decide you selected the wrong meal plan, you have a grace period at the beginning of each term to change plans. You can change your meal plan for the fall and spring terms any time before the two week add/drop period ends.

Q: When will I hear about my fall term housing?

A: Beginning in March 2008, approximately three weeks after a student has paid his or her $300 enrollment fee, a housing information packet will be mailed to him/her with directions for completing the online housing contract. Students will be alerted of their residence hall and roommate assignments (if applicable) in early to mid-July. For more information regarding fall term housing, please visit http://www.pc.pitt.edu/housing/.

Q: When do freshmen move into their fall term housing?

A: Students attending the final PittStart session on August 18-19, 2008 may move in to their residence hall on Monday, August 18th. For all other freshmen, the dates of move-in occur on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 19-20, 2008. More information can be found at the Arrival Survival website.
